Centre Court is now over 80 years old and we need to make significant
improvements to ensure that the quality of the Wimbledon experience remains at the highest level.
Major Improvements for Centre Court
In 2005, the All England Club unveiled the next stage of the Long
Term Plan, the focus of which will be a series of major improvements
to Centre Court.
The proposed improvements to Centre Court include:
An increase in seating capacity from 13,800 to 15,000, by the
addition of six rows of seating to the upper tiers
on three sides, combined with improved access to Centre Court
The replacement of the old seating and the installation of
new, wider and more comfortable seats
The construction of a lightweight retractable roof over Centre
Court which will enable all weather play during The Championships.
This advanced structure will be made of strong and highly translucent
materials, retaining an ‘open’ feel when closed
These will provide Centre Court Debenture Holders with a substantial upgrade and expansion
to their facilities, and a completely new east wing. As well as nearly doubling the space
currently available, this will provide a waitress service restaurant and improved
bar facilities.
It is anticipated that, subject to planning and construction, the new restaurant and bar will be
available from 2008, with the retractable roof completed in time for the 2009 Championships.
