Museum Workshops

Our Museum Workshops are interactive, hands-on and include practical activities for all to enjoy. We offer the following workshops.

HISTORY TELLERS (KS1)

'Why do we remember Maud Watson?'

Take a journey back to Victorian times and meet Maud Watson, the very first Wimbledon Ladies’ Lawn Tennis Champion of 1884. Be inspired as she relives her triumphs with you. Discover the pleasures and perils of playing in petticoats and corsets!

History QCA Unit 4

VICTORIAN WIMBLEDON (KS2)

'How did life change for the people of Victorian Wimbledon when Lawn Tennis became a hit?'

This new workshop provides children with the opportunity to use primary historical sources including maps, census returns, photographs and paintings to discover what Wimbledon was like before The Championships arrived. Using replica costume children will discover what it was like to be a Victorian tennis player, how The Championships developed and the impact it had on the local area. The session concludes with the whole class taking on a character from the 1901 census to debate whether The Championships had a positive impact on Wimbledon.
