Museum wins Visit London Attraction of the Year Award

December 2006

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum is revelling in the glory of its new status as winner of the Visit London Large Visitor Attraction of the Year Award 2006. Re-opened in April 2006, the new WLTM is the culmination of a five year multi-million pound relocation, redesign and refurbishment. It has fought off stiff competition to claim this highly sought after title and have their unique venue and collection officially recognised by Visit London.

Having previously been awarded the London Tourist Board Small Attraction of the Year Award in 2002, the Museum has made vast strides to become the top attraction in 2006. WLTM combines state-of-the-art interactive touch screens with its unparalleled collection of traditional and contemporary tennis memorabilia, all exploring the story of the game and the Wimbledon Championships, from past to present, in a vibrant and entertaining way.

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum experience now offers:

• The Science of Tennis filmed on Centre Court being shown in the 200° Cinema with amazing computer generated 3-D effects
• Seeing John McEnroe ‘live’ in a reconstruction of the 1980s Gentlemen’s Dressing Room
• Interactive touch screens bringing to life the Museum’s extensive archive
• The world’s greatest collection of tennis memorabilia and artifacts
• The renowned Championships’ trophies
• The Wimbledon Tour – an exclusive behind-the-scenes in the company of a professional Blue Badge guide

The entire experience is complemented by a superb audio guide, which is offered as part of the entry price and available in eight languages - English, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian, French, German and Italian. There are also special audio tours for the partially sighted and, for use by the deaf, handheld sets which give interpretation in UK sign language.

Tim Phillips, Chairman of the All England Club commented, “It is a great honour to accept this award. I am delighted that our efforts and achievements in the refurbishment of the Museum have received such acclaim.”

An official venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics, Wimbledon hosts some of the world’s best tennis that is rich in history and quintessentially British. Supporting this, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum presents the past, present and future of the sport and has become not only the ultimate destination for tennis fans around the world but also the top attraction in London.
